Parental Roles for 2010-2011
1. Troop Secretary – Is at all meetings. This person’s role is to help the troop leader with any paperwork that needs to be done. Some duties will include creating the telephone tree, checking attendance, update paperwork, and complete the Junior badge record sheet. 2. Troop Treasure – Is at all meetings. This person’s role is to help the troop leader with dues collection. She/he will collect the dues sheet from each patrol treasurer and verify that the information is correct. They will collect dues from any girl arriving late to meetings. Other jobs may include collecting money for trips and helping the cookie mom if needed. 3. Cookie Mom – This is a large job that runs from January to April. This person’s role is to coordinate the sale of our cookie fundraiser. They are responsible for attending any training, holding a parent meeting to pass out cookie information, collecting all pre-orders, arranging cookie booth sales, and making sure that all money has been collected and deposited into the proper accounts. 4. SHARE – This is a small job that runs from September until finished. This person’s role is to coordinate the SHARE donation. SHARE money is used to fund camps, training for leaders, and offers financial aid to girls who can not afford Girl Scouting. Her/his role is to pass out SHARE envelopes and to collect them upon return. 5. Chaperone’s – This is an as needed job. These people are needed to attend events and help to keep the girls safe during trips. They are required to be registered Girl Scouts and must complete the 100A and 100B training that is available on-line. The troop will attempt to cover the full cost of admission to the event but will not be able to cover parking or gas. 6. Camp Certified – This is an as needed job. This person’s role is to attend the training that is offered through GSCNC and keep their training up to date. The training involves a 3 hour course during the week and a weekend long camping trip. This training is offered for free to any registered Adult Girl Scout. 7. CPR/First Aider – This is an as needed job. This person’s role is to attend the training that is offered through GSCNC and keep their training up to date. This person will be needed to attend events that the current first aider can not. They must have both CPR and First Aid. Events might include camping, overnights, or any outside of meeting activity. Please be aware that if you are scheduled to attend training and are not able to you need to cancel. If you are considered a no show for any training the troop looses it Honor Troop status. In order for this troop to have success we must all work together. I hope that everyone has had a great summer!
Now that school has started it is time to talk Girl Scouts. There will be a few changes this year. To start with a new meeting time and place. I hope that this change will not effect anyone schedule. We will discuss the other changes at the first meeting. Parents there will be a 30 minute meeting during the last half of the meeting. Please plan to be there. We will talk about books, uniforms, and plans for the year. Now that I have rested...what a wonderful time! Our special guest Soap was there to greet the girls as they arrived and she was so glad to see everyone.
Our evening started off with bracing the yards. The girls experienced how to move the sails. Then they learned about the capstan. This system was used for lifting and moving heavy objects onto the ship. Thank you to the adult volunteers during this demonstration. Reminded me of a donkey wheel. The ships cook talked to us about food in the navy then served us delicious beef stew and hard tack for dinner. The night ended with a tour of the ship and a scavenger hunt. Night watch began and the Juniors took the job very seriously. Even gave the chaperons a hard to for not being in their hammocks. Of course Friday night at Inner Harbor proved to be LOUD. There was a BAD rock band that played until 3am. The girls were trooper and most fell asleep before 11pm. The leader was a nervous wreck just waiting for someone to fall out of bed. No one did so I went without sleep for nothing. "I'm alive, alert, awake, enthusiastic" was the wake up call from our sleepy leader. After getting dressed and packing our gear the girls were ready for morning inspection. It was good to see that none of them had dirty hands or tobacco in their cheeks. We had some breakfast then a less in sewing. Our final activity was to man the cannon. The girls helped to move the cannon, load it with some adult help, and move it back into place. Finally we moved to the spar deck to see a live-firing of one of the great guns. Parents,
Please remember that we are all volunteers. All of us have jobs, children, homework, housework, sports, Girl Scouts and much more on our schedules. Sometimes there seems to be too much to handle. Volunteers and parent help is what makes this troop great! I can not and will not do it alone. When dealing with others in the troop remember that there might be more going on then we are aware of. We must also live by the Girl Scout Law and Promise. I thank all of the volunteers who have helped out over the years. The troop would not be the same without you! Jennifer Received new today that ALL Girl Scout camps are at capacity. This is great news. Elaine and I will be working (volunteering) at Bay Breeze this year. We are looking forward to another fun year at camp and can't wait to see all the girls there.
The girls had a wonderful time learning the who, what, when, where, why and how to take care of a horse. I had a few nervous nellies to start with but they warmed up to the horse quickly. Now that we have learned the basics it is time to find a place to ride. I will have a link to the pictures as soon as possible. Driving through DC can be a challenge so big thanks go out to Elaine and Linda for navigating us. The girls had a blast as they stood next to famous people from yesterday and today. We were able to get up close and personal with each of the figures there.
Parents, I hope that you enjoyed the wax hands. This activity was a test of patience for the girls and they did great! We had an hours wait until they started our troop. I was very proud of how the girls acted. We had an amazing time! Photos are available under the Photos link on the left Yesterday was our last booth sale. Thank you to the girls and parents that came out and battled the elements to sell cookies. We had great results! I am in the process of sorting empty boxes from full boxes. Once that is done we will send out an email with the extra cookies that we have. Please help the troop in selling any extra boxes or we loose money.
I am so glad that 98 years ago today Juliette Gordon Low called Nina Pape and started GSUSA, I have had so many wonderful experiences and met so many wonderful people through Girl Scouts... Happy Birthday Girl Scouts!!
